DukeLee.com was The MVM's first website and first foray into Flash. We scanned the Thomas Guide for Chicago into our old Mac and put it up page by page so that viewers could zoom in on sections through links. Field recordings of one minute, from a total of 133 sites all over Chicago, were available through links once a visitor was at street-level resolution. The links were Flash movies that streamed sound over a still photo of the locale taken at the time the recording was made. Generally we recorded for five minutes minimum at each locale, so as to get a really cherry one minute sample.
With the advent of Google maps, The MVM is seriously considering recreating this piece. The original site, in keeping with The MVM's principles at the time, was not available online. It could only be viewed by visiting our apartment and sitting at our G3.
Okay, technically it was online for a day or so, on a friend's server, so we could test it and make sure that it worked properly from other machines. It did (tested by compatriots in CA and NYC), so we took it down.
DukeLee.com was a double CD. A handful of the field recordings made for the site were selected for release on the first CD, DukeLee.com/Chicago. A single recording made on Chicago's lakefront one incredibly cold night, and from which several individual moments made it up to the site, was released in its entirety as DukeLee.com/Listen.
Once again, for our lives, we can not recall to whom we sent these seven discs.
