Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman

New Portraits By Lee Pembleton

Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman revisits Sue Sparks, feted by the MVM in last year’s Frailty Thy Name Is Woman retrospective of her arts and writings. For this exhibit artist we spent a week living with Sparks, trying to ascertain how best to represent her in a museum setting through our art.

We settled on the traditional practice of photography, one of our first loves. But rather than photograph Sparks, we photographed the imagined world she has crafted for herself, in a simple portraiture style capturing all the creatures she shares her home with.
